The Korean Business Research Institute released their analysis of K-pop girl groups’ brand reputation rankings for the month of January! A brand reputation ranking is an analysis of the value of a group’s name in media, not necessarily popularity. Their rankings are made through analysis on consumer participation, media coverage, interaction, and community indexes found through big data gathered over the course of one month.
The data was gathered between December 9, 2019 and January 10, 2020. This means it slightly overlaps with the December brand ranking analysis (gathered November 13-December 14).
Red Velvet shot up from number 5 to take the top spot on this month’s ranking! They reached a total brand reputation index of 9,159,395, an amazing 74.48% higher than their index from last month (5,249,661)! This is likely in part due to the buzz surrounding the group’s comeback with “‘The ReVe Festival’ Finale” and their title track “Psycho” on December 23.
The biggest related search terms were “Psycho”, their title track, “Wendy”, and “Joy”. The related keywords shine some light on the search terms, with the most common being “release”, “injured”, and “confirm”. One of the biggest issues surrounding Red Velvet over the past month was Wendy’s injury due to lacking safety measures and staff negligence at the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejeon. While this was supposed to be a happy day, because the Gayo Daejeon was broadcasting Red Velvet’s comeback performance, it also lead to the halt of any comeback promotions for the group.
Positive reactions to the group were recorded at 66.87%. When you look at the breakdown of Red Velvet’s brand reputation index, consumer interaction with their online brand jumped an amazing 261.20%.
Despite not appearing on Korean year end music festivals or making any major announcement, BLACKPINK‘s overall brand reputation index rose 27.68% and pushed them up to number 2! Their index is up to 8,643,201 from 6,769,562 last month. Our guess is that this is partially thanks to the international recognition their summer hit “Kill This Love” received from media outlets worldwide at the end of the year! The group is currently wrapping up their tour and preparing for a Korean comeback.
(G)I-DLE continues to prove their influence as relative rookies to the K-pop scene by staying in the number 3 spot. The group’s brand reputation index fell 27.68% from 9,757,832 to 7,895,756, but they have the highest media index of any of the top three.
