The Fact Music Awards (TMA) announced the winners of their award show online!
TMA was originally scheduled to take place on February 29 at the Gocheok Dome in Seoul. The event was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but the organizers decided to announce the winners for 2019 online and to just organize a new awards show later this year.
The awards show announced all of their winners online on March 16 at 10AM KST, and here they are!
DAESANG (Grand Prize) – BTS
BTS won the daesang (grand prize) from the 2019 TMA! This is no doubt due to the amazing success brought by their 2019 album, “MAP OF THE SOUL : PERSONA”, which has caused them to take home nearly every daesang for 2019!
The group just ended Korean promotions for their fourth full length album, “MAP OF THE SOUL : 7”, which has brought them even huger sales and success. We bet we’ll see BTS in this spot again next year!
LISTENERS’ CHOICE – BTS
BTS is truly the listeners’ choice, with their huge and loyal fandom, ARMY! This award, much like the daesang, was chosen based 40% on album sales and 60% votes from a judging panel. It’s not hard to tell how much ARMY love and support this group even if you don’t count the sales, and we bet ARMY’s love won over the judges!
ARTISTS OF THE YEAR
Nine artists were chosen as artist of the year by the TMA judging panel! There’s no denying that these amazing groups really made K-pop shine in 2019.
BTS is no surprise, with the international recognition they have gained as a group and brought to K-pop as a whole! Super Junior maintains their huge Korean and international popularity even 15 years into their careers, showing that K-pop groups’ careers don’t need to end if they just keep working hard. MONSTA X is another group that has been opening doors for K-pop worldwide, especially in the USA! NU’EST made a huge comeback in 2019, with Minhyun returning to the group and the group as a whole gaining their first music show win!
TWICE had yet another successful year as the ‘nation’s girl group’, with their tracks “Fancy” and “Feel Special” bringing an amazing, mature change to the group’s concept! Red Velvet brought more unique concepts to the K-pop scene, having success with “Zimzalabim”, “Umpah Umpah”, and finally their darker concept with “Psycho”. MAMAMOO caught everyone’s eyes this year with their bold comeback with “HIP”, with the members individually gaining love for their personalities. Chungha is the only solo artist to grace this list, but it’s no surprise with how successful her January release of “Gotta Go” being one of the top songs of the year!
BAND PERFORMER OF THE YEAR
N.Flying and IZ take home the award for band performers of the year! N.Flying’s popularity skyrocketed in 2019 with the release of their hit song, “Rooftop”, which could be heard playing all around Korea. IZ are somewhat newcomers to the K-pop scene, just beginning to gain recognition in 2019, but their songs keep drawing in more and more fans. We can look forward to both of these groups in 2020!
DANCE PERFORMER OF THE YEAR
Dance performer of the year goes to three amazing groups: Stray Kids, THE BOYZ, and (G)I-DLE! Stray Kids amazed fans all year long with their high energy performances with “MIROH” and “Side Effects” before bringing their more dramatic year-end comeback, “Levanter”. THE BOYZ continued to amaze fans with their bright songs “Bloom Bloom” and “D.D.D” that made us want to really dance, dance, dance! (G)I-DLE was possibly one of the biggest groups of the year, bringing old school hip-hop back with “Uh-Oh” before catching everyone’s attention with their “QUEENDOM” finale hit, “LION”.
All three of these groups will have a lot of great music and performances in store for 2020!
TMA chose the next leaders from all the new debuts in 2019. It’s no surprise that TOMORROW X TOGETHER and ITZY came out on top! Both groups broke records with how quickly they won their first music show awards, and have continued to bring back more hits. ITZY as a whole was one of the most digitally successful groups of the year, with their debut track “DALLA DALLA” being one of the highest charting songs of the year. TXT has already gathered a huge fanbase and is continuing to grow their popularity in Korea and overseas, following in the footsteps of their company seniors, BTS.
WORLDWIDE ICON – Super Junior
Super Junior was chosen as the Worldwide Icon of the year, with their ninth full length album’s title track “Super CLAP” getting everyone dancing worldwide. These legends of K-pop can’t be ignored, and we can look forward to their activities as a group and individually in 2020.
TMA Popularity Award – BTS
Chosen completely based on fan votes, the TMA Popularity Award goes to BTS! ARMY around the world banded together to boost this group’s votes, proving that their popularity just keeps on growing! We’re excited to see just how far BTS’s popularity will reach in 2020.
The 2019 TMA ended without a ceremony, but the organizers will upload award acceptance videos from the winning groups as they get them! So we can look forward to some great videos in the near future.
